Family is more than blood—it is belonging, legacy, and the quiet pull of place. Land is Family is a meditation on the deep connection between people and land, exploring resilience, memory, and the unseen ties that bind generations. Through black-and-white imagery, this series reflects on the rhythms of farming life and the unspoken question: What truly makes a family?
Family is not just lineage. It is not simply the people we are born to, nor the names written in old books. Family is belonging—to a place, to a history, to something greater than oneself. It is found in the hands that shape and sustain, in the quiet acts of devotion that pass unseen, in the spaces between duty and love.
This question—What is family?—became the heartbeat of this work. Over 15 months, I immersed myself in the daily rhythms of a sixth-generation farming family in Victoria’s Wimmera-Mallee region. I was drawn not just to the land they worked but to the way it held them, shaped them, called them back even when they had left. Their connection to the soil was not just physical—it was generational, emotional, spiritual. This was not just land. This was inheritance, memory, sacrifice. This was family.

Through this series, I sought to explore the unspoken, the inherited, the unseen forces that bind people to place—how land can carry the weight of love, how family can exist beyond blood, and how belonging is something both chosen and inescapable.
Land is Family is not a traditional portrait of farming. It is a meditation on continuity and change, devotion and endurance. The images are created in black and white, stripping away distraction, reducing life to its purest contrasts—light and shadow, presence and absence, past and present.
In every frame, I saw echoes of those who came before, those who left, those who stayed. The land carries them all.
I was drawn to the lines—the furrows in the earth, the cracks in the hands that have worked it for generations, the way wind moves through the crops as if it, too, remembers. In every frame, I saw echoes of those who came before, those who left, those who stayed. The land carries them all.
Each photograph is a question, a reflection: Where do we come from? What do we hold onto? What do we let go? What truly makes a family?
It was only fitting that Land is Family was first exhibited in the Murtoa Stick Shed, a structure built to serve the land and the people who worked it. This vast timber cathedral, once a storehouse for grain, now became a house for memory. Within its towering beams, the images found their resonance—a story of land returning to the land.
The exhibition and fine art book are not just records of farming life. They are a bridge between urban and rural experiences, an invitation to step beyond the fences and see farming not as industry, but as a living, breathing relationship—one that demands everything, and in return, gives life itself.

This work does not seek to answer the question What is family? Instead, it invites you to ask it for yourself.
Perhaps family is the land that holds our roots, even when we try to untangle ourselves from it.
Perhaps family is the land that holds our roots, even when we try to untangle ourselves from it. Perhaps it is the weight of memory, the quiet devotion of hands tending to something that will outlive them. Perhaps it is simply the act of belonging—to a place, to a people, to a story larger than ourselves.
As you move through this series, I invite you to reflect: Where do you belong? What shapes you? What is your family?
Art, to me, is both a quiet rebellion and an act of connection. It is the courage to reveal vulnerability and the hope to foster healing—not just for myself, but for others. My work explores resilience, identity, and the beauty in imperfection, amplifying voices often left unheard. Through storytelling and imagery, I aim to create empathy, bridge worlds, and inspire reflection, inviting you to find your own meaning within these shared journeys.
MoreCollaboration is where art becomes transformative—where stories merge, ideas spark, and together, we create something extraordinary. My work blends storytelling and imagery to amplify voices, foster empathy, and inspire community. From conceptual creations and community campaigns to exhibitions and workshops, I welcome partnerships that share a vision for connection, resilience, and hope. Let’s create meaningful impact together.
