Scars, I Remember

AUD 1970

Some things do not close; they learn to resonate. Poppy red returns not as bloom but as pulse—kept in the dark, steady as a vow. What was once impact becomes cadence, a quiet timing the heart recognises.

Poppy red remembers; not a flower, a vow—quiet fire kept in the dark.

Some marks do not fade; they learn to resonate. In Scars, I Remember, poppy red is not a bloom but a pulse—pressed into a near-black field and scored with incisions like lived scars, fine lines of greenish tension crossing the surface. The painting reads like breath held and released: pressure, drag, lift—a choreography of what remains after impact. Nothing is illustrated; everything is felt. The red does not announce triumph or wound—it insists on presence.

The work gathers from two currents: the stories encountered through Of Service—where remembrance is practised as care—and the artist’s own held weather, long bottled, now given form. Jenani’s abstraction translates weight into rhythm, rupture into resonance: a central pulse pressing against shadow until the field itself begins to hum.

Within this cadence, the painting keeps company with the emotive charge of Rothko and the gestural insistence of Joan Mitchell, and with the material gravitas of Anselm Kiefer, where history leaves a surface, not a slogan. Yet the voice is unmistakably Jenani’s—tenderness holding vigil, restraint answering force, remembrance practised as care.

Scars, I Remember does not ask for closure; it offers coherence—a way the past can live without owning the present.

My Philosophy

Art, to me, is both a quiet rebellion and an act of connection. It is the courage to reveal vulnerability and the hope to foster healing—not just for myself, but for others. My work explores resilience, identity, and the beauty in imperfection, amplifying voices often left unheard. Through storytelling and imagery, I aim to create empathy, bridge worlds, and inspire reflection, inviting you to find your own meaning within these shared journeys.
